Session Description:

Germline gene therapy involves modifying the DNA in preimplantation embryos for the purposes of preventing genetic disease transmission to future generations.  In-vitro gametogenesis (IVG) aims to create germ cells in vitro using somatic cells.  IVG could be used to treat infertility and to allow same-sex couples to reproduce.  Such promises come with some many scientific, legal, and ethical challenges.

Session Objectives:

1. Describe mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) and its clinical applications
2. Describe heritable human genome editing for the prevention of genetic disease transmission
3. Discuss in-vitro gametogenesis
4. Discuss the safety and ethical issues associated with germline gene therapy
